Warrior Run, ranked in the top 12 in the state, came away with the HAC league title by going 5-0 and Hughesville finished 3-2 at the Duals, which got underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Many of the familiar names came away with some
victories, but also some of the newcomers and role guys who may be just starting or just starting to come into their own. The two standouts for Warrior Run in this tournament, as well as all season, were Kaiden Milheim and Ty Ulrich, each guy had worked hard on the mats to come away with the respective wins.
“I think today I did really great. I had a bit of a slow start, the first two matches for me were forfeits so I didn’t really get a chance to warm up or anything, but this was the big match and happy with how it turned out,” said Kaiden Milheim.
“I think we are fully capable of making state sections this year. I think this would be the first team in Warrior Run history to qualify for the state tournament and once that happens, I think were fully capable of placing there,” Milheim mentioned.
Milheims recently captured his 100th career win last week at the Gettysburg Duals, helping the Defender wrestling team win 5-0 that day while winning the award for most pins in the least amount of time.
Milheim will be competing for American University next fall as a recruit and now becomes the 16th Warrior Run wrestler all-time to earn his 100th career win.
“I’ll run mostly if I need to try and get a little bit of weight off, but my weight has always been in a good spot and try and keep it around there, but me and my brother were practice partners and we like to keep practice good technique while trying to be more physical,” Milheim said.
Milheim won his first match over Hughesville’s Mason Mordan with a fall in 5 minutes, 31 seconds. Milheim then defeated Southern Columbia’s Mason Bernitskie via decision, 6-2.
In the finals, Warrior Run faced off against a tough Mount Carmel wrestling team. Milheim was the heart and soul of the Defenders and completed picked up a victory over Mount Carmel’s Ben Miller with a fall in 2:50.
Warrior Run was outstanding in the duals. The Defenders beat Bloomsburg (75-0), Loyalsock (64-12), Hughesville (65-10), Southern Columbia (61-3) and Mount Carmel (62-9).
“We’re a young team we’re basically a team with one senior and I think we have two juniors in the starting lineup and about 10 freshman and sophomores and they’ve all been tested and they’ve all wrestled quality matches and they’ve all really grown and have gotten better as the season progressed so it’s really good to see that,” said Warrior Run coach Jeremy Betz.
Betz mentioned how the young defender team has been coming along.
“Just thought the kids and the whole team as a whole wrestled really well today. They’ve been doing a good job at supporting each other throughout the matches. We like to line up along each side of the next guy and set up like a small little army as we go and they get excited for everybody and they get excited when we’re outmatched but we take team points,” Betz said. “They just do a real good job with that and I think we’ve done a real good job at that, and we did a good job at getting some bonus points as a team this match so that’s always a good thing.”
The other Warrior Run wrestler to have a very solid day on the mats was freshman Ty Ulrich who also helped contribute to the defenders wins on the afternoon.
“I think I did pretty well today, I think I performed well you know, four pins is four pins so yeah very pleased with that,” Ulrich said.
Ulrich pinned Loyalsock’s Brayden Gifford in 28 seconds during their bout at 127 pounds. Against Hughesville, Ulrich had a win come via forfeit.
He knows that he is only a few wins shy of his goal he set out to accomplish which was to get 30 wins on the season.
“I knew coming in here that I had a good shot at going 5-0, so I just wanted to go out and dominate and score as many points as I could, but my goal for the postseason I guess is to end up in Hershey and get a couple wins down there,” Ulrich noted. “I want to finish here with 30 wins, right now I’m at 26 so definitely in reach of accomplishing that goal.”
Making states as a team is the goal for those on the mats for Warrior Run.
“It would be pretty awesome (to make states) that has been our goal all season long. You know team states, that’s just something we’re pushing every day in the room,” Ulrich said. “We’re getting better every day to accomplish that goal, but first you know we have to get past district duals and we’re going to have another tough match against those real good teams like Benton and Montgomery. There’s
a bunch of tough teams over there and we just have to go out there and perform our very best.”
Ulrich likes to take a few pages out of teammate Kaden Milheim’s playbook and utilize some of the different special things that he can do on the mat.
“He (Kaden Milheim) is definitely a good person to look up to and aspire to be, he’s a D1 commit going to American so he’s a special kind of wrestler, special kind of guy and he’s very important to us to have in that room and practice with grappling and stuff like that,” Ulrich said. “He’s really good on his feet and he’s really good on ankle picks and low singles and stuff like that so having him in the room makes me cautious of that.”
Hughesville saw success throughout the duals. The Spartans beat Bloomsburg (58-12), Loyalsock (54-18) and Mount Carmel (42-30) and suffered losses against Southern Columbia (46-15) and Warrior Run (65-10).
“I think we’re doing pretty well. I think we can go far this has been one of the better Hughesville teams over the past few years,” Moon said. “Coach (Troy Charles) is being really strong and it’s just been a great year all around for us.”
Against Bloomsburg, Chase Snyder (121), Wesley Harvey (127), Nathan Bieber (114), Caiden Puderbach (139) and Wyatt Gavitt (172) all recorded wins by fall. Reese Moon won by major decision at 160 against Kayden James, 13-4.
In the win over Loyalsock, Hughesville again saw Bieber, Harvey, Keegan Smith (160) and Gavitt win via pin.
In the Mount Carmel win, Bieber pinned Brody Brinkash in 2:36, Shaner pinned Gavin Kotzo in 3:17, Knight pinned Brady Wolkoski in 1:29 at 139 and Gavitt had a 62-second pin in his bout against Gavin Lasko.
